They hold the base firmly open without assistance, so there is no risk of the base dropping unexpectedly. With normal use, the mechanism should last the lifetime of the bed.

This varies by model and is specified on each individual product listing. If your bed will be pushed against a wall on one side, we'd recommend a foot-end opening ottoman to ensure easy access. Always check the opening direction before ordering.

No — the ottoman base itself acts as the mattress support. There is no need for a separate base, divan, or box spring. Simply place your mattress directly on the slatted panel within the ottoman frame.

Yes — ottoman beds are compatible with all standard mattress types including memory foam, pocket sprung, orthopaedic, and hybrid. The one consideration is mattress weight: very heavy mattresses (over 40kg) can make the ottoman harder to lift, so a lighter foam or hybrid mattress is recommended if easy storage access is a priority.

The ottoman base is designed for storing household items and bedding, not for supporting body weight. As a guide, the bases are designed to hold up to around 100–120kg of stored items. Do not sit, stand, or climb into the storage area as this may damage the mechanism.
