Open Coil Mattresses

Whilst the popularity of pocket sprung mattresses is rising, the open coil spring mattress, often referred to as a Bonnell spring, remains the most popular mattress choice due to its combination of comfort and affordability. Put simply, Bonnell translates to fewer springs present in the mattress. However, don’t be fooled into thinking that low spring count has anything to do with reduced comfort levels. Our collection of Open Coil mattresses comes in single, small double, double, king and super king sizes.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know before you order.

  • An open coil mattress uses a single piece of wire shaped into a series of interlinked springs. It is a traditional, cost-effective construction that offers good general support and durability. It is best suited to guest rooms, occasional use, or as a budget-friendly everyday option.

  • Yes — open coil mattresses do transfer more motion because the springs are connected. If you or your partner are light sleepers sensitive to movement, a pocket sprung or memory foam mattress would provide a more undisturbed night's sleep. Open coil mattresses are well-suited to single sleepers or occasional use.

  • Open coil mattresses generally have a shorter lifespan — typically 5–7 years with proper care, compared to 7–10 years for a quality pocket sprung mattress. Regular rotation will maximise the lifespan. For a guest bedroom or children's first mattress, open coil represents excellent value.

  • Most of our open coil mattresses are double-sided and should be both rotated and flipped regularly — we recommend rotating head-to-foot and flipping every 3 months. This distributes wear evenly across both surfaces and significantly extends the mattress life. The product listing confirms whether a mattress is single or double-sided.

  • Standard open coil mattresses can lose their support for heavier sleepers more quickly than firmer constructions. We'd generally recommend an orthopaedic or firm pocket sprung mattress for heavier sleepers who need consistent long-term support.
