Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know before you order.

  • The term orthopaedic refers to a mattress designed with extra-firm support to promote proper spinal alignment. Orthopaedic mattresses are typically firmer than standard mattresses and are often recommended by physios and osteopaths for those with back, hip, or joint pain.

  • It is common to need an adjustment period of 2–4 weeks when moving to a firmer orthopaedic mattress, especially if you're used to a softer sleeping surface. This is normal — the body needs time to adapt to the new level of support. If after 4 weeks the mattress still feels uncomfortable, please contact us.

  • While orthopaedic mattresses are particularly beneficial for back pain sufferers, heavier sleepers, and those who prefer a firm feel, they are not exclusively for medical use. Stomach sleepers also often benefit. However, if you're a side sleeper or prefer a softer feel, an orthopaedic mattress may feel uncomfortably hard.

  • Our orthopaedic mattresses typically fall in the 7–9 range on a firmness scale where 10 is the firmest. The exact firmness rating is specified on each product listing. If you're recovering from a specific back condition, we'd always recommend speaking to your GP or physiotherapist about the right firmness level.

  • Some of our mattresses combine an orthopaedic spring base with a memory foam comfort layer on top — giving you structured spinal support with the pressure-relieving benefits of memory foam. These hybrid orthopaedic options are flagged on the relevant product listings.
