Double Mattresses

A UK standard double mattress measures 135cm wide by 190cm long (4ft6 x 6ft3). This is the most popular mattress size in the UK and is available across the widest range of constructions, firmness levels, and price points. All our double bed frames are designed to fit this exact size.

If you and your partner prefer different firmness levels, a zip-and-link mattress is worth considering — two separate mattresses of different firmness are zipped together to create a single sleeping surface. Alternatively, a medium-firm pocket sprung mattress is typically the best compromise as it provides individually responsive support.

We recommend rotating your double mattress head-to-foot every 3 months during the first year of use, then every 6 months thereafter. If your mattress is double-sided, alternate between rotating and flipping. Rotating helps distribute wear evenly and significantly extends the mattress lifespan.

A double mattress typically weighs between 20kg and 35kg depending on the construction type. Memory foam and pocket sprung mattresses tend to be heavier than open coil. While one person can manage a single mattress, we recommend two people for moving or rotating a double mattress to avoid strain.

Combination sleepers benefit most from a medium-firm mattress with good responsiveness — meaning it adjusts relatively quickly as you change position. A pocket sprung mattress or a memory foam mattress with a responsive top layer tends to work best for this sleeping style.
