Back Support Mattresses

Sleeping on the incorrect mattress can cause back pain or worsen existing lower back issues. Inadequate support from a mattress will reinforce poor sleeping positions, muscular strains and does not assist with correct spinal alignment. These factors combine to cause lasting back pain. Sleeping comfort may also be sacrificed if mattresses don’t match an individual’s sleeping preferences. A mattress which provides back support and comfort helps alleviate back pain, allowing the structure of the spine to rest during sleep.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know before you order.

  • Back support mattresses combine a firm, high-tension spring or foam core with targeted zoning that provides firmer support in the lumbar region. The key is maintaining neutral spinal alignment — the mattress should support the natural curve of the lower back without allowing the hips to sink too deeply.

  • Not always — the right firmness depends on your sleeping position and body type. A very firm mattress can create pressure points at the shoulders and hips for side sleepers. The ideal is a medium-firm mattress that is supportive enough to maintain alignment but has enough give to relieve pressure. Our back support range covers medium-firm to firm options.

  • Many customers notice an improvement within the first 2–3 weeks. However, it typically takes 4–6 weeks for the body to fully adjust to a new sleeping surface. If you're experiencing significant back problems, we always recommend consulting a healthcare professional alongside any mattress change.

  • Yes — our back support mattresses are particularly well-suited to heavier sleepers, as the firmer construction maintains its support over time without excessive sinking. Lighter sleepers may find them on the firm side; in that case our orthopaedic range with a foam comfort layer on top may offer a better balance.

  • Yes — a thin (3–5cm) comfort topper can take the edge off a very firm mattress while preserving the underlying support. However, a very thick or very soft topper can negate the spinal support benefits entirely. If you need significant additional softness, the mattress itself may not be the right firmness for you.
