When to Replace Your Mattress: 7 Signs It's Time

Most people replace their mattress years later than they should, mostly because the decline is so gradual you don't notice it. Here's what to actually look for.

1. It's over 7-8 years old

Even a well-made mattress loses support over time. If yours is nearing a decade, age alone is reason enough to check the rest of this list.

2. You sleep better away from home

If a hotel bed or a night at a friend's house leaves you feeling more rested than your own bed, that's one of the clearest signs your mattress is the problem, not your sleep habits.

3. Visible sagging or lumps

A dip in the middle, especially if you can see it with no one lying on it, means the internal structure — springs or foam — has broken down and isn't recovering.

4. Waking up with aches

Lower back pain, stiff shoulders, or numbness that eases once you're up and moving usually points to a mattress that's no longer supporting your spine properly.

5. It's noisy

Creaking or squeaking with a sprung mattress usually means the coils have worn down and lost tension.

6. Allergies flaring up at night

Mattresses accumulate dust mites and allergens over years of use. If you're sneezing more at night than during the day, it's worth investigating.

7. You've changed size, weight, or sleep position significantly

A mattress that suited you five years ago may not suit you now — particularly if your weight has changed or you've switched from side to back sleeping.

What to look for in a replacement

Match the mattress type to how you actually sleep: memory foam contours well for side sleepers, pocket sprung offers more responsive support for back and combination sleepers, and hybrid options split the difference.
