Ottoman vs Divan Storage Beds: Which Is Actually Right for You?
If you're short on space, the choice usually comes down to two options: ottoman or divan. Both give you serious extra storage without needing a separate wardrobe or under-bed boxes, but they work very differently — and picking the wrong one for your room can mean a daily headache.
How an ottoman bed works
An ottoman bed lifts from the base, usually via a gas-strut mechanism, giving you access to the full area underneath the mattress in one go. Think of it like the boot of a car — everything's visible and reachable at once.
Best for: bulky items like spare bedding, suitcases, and seasonal clothing you don't need to grab quickly.
How a divan bed works
A divan bed stores everything in drawers built into the base itself — usually two or four, depending on the size. You open them like you would a chest of drawers, from the side or end of the bed.
Best for: things you need more regular access to, since you're not lifting the whole mattress to get to them.
Space and room layout
This is where the decision often gets made for you. Ottoman beds need clearance on at least one side to lift fully — usually 60-70cm — so they're not ideal if your bed is pushed hard against a wall on both sides. Divan drawers only need clearance on the side the drawer opens from, which makes them more forgiving in a tighter room.
Which stores more?
Ottoman beds generally win on raw capacity — you're using the entire under-mattress void as one open space rather than splitting it into drawer compartments. If you're clearing out a box room or storing bulky winter items, ottoman is usually the better fit.
Our take
If you want maximum capacity and don't mind lifting the bed occasionally, go ottoman. If you want quick, everyday access without disturbing the mattress, go divan. Either way, you're getting a lot more usable room than a standard bed frame.
